In the 1980s, the Guide Dog Association initiated a breeding and research program for hypoallergenic guide dogs. This was the beginning of the Australian, multi – generation Labradoodle as we know it today. This Australian Labradoodle started as a cross between a Labrador retriever and a Standard Poodle. Dogs from Australia were crossed for several generations, to create what is known as “multi-generation” Labradoodles. The Australian Labradoodle has been developed over the years. The founders of the Australian Labradoodle , Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, added several other races into their breeding lines of their Labrador retriever early / Poodle crosses, to achieve the best consistency of temperament and coat , as we have today.
These dogs have been bred to continue the Australian, multi – generation lines. The Australian Labradoodle is far more likely to be non-shedding and allergy friendly than other types of Labradoodles, such as the first generation Labrador retriever / Poodle cross or first generation hybrids bred back to Poodles. Even when the Labrador retriever / Poodle crossed for several generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle.
The true Australian Labradoodle is the result of six or more successful generations of careful breeding. The result is a healthy, well tempered dog with a non-shedding hypoallergenic coat.
Hypoallergenic means that 95 % of people with asthma and / or allergies will not have reactions to dander or fur of the Australian Labradoodle. The small percentage of the people who have allergies to Australian Labradoodles are most likely allergic to dog’s saliva , and will generally respond to any breed of dog , shedding or not.

The Labradoodle is a compact dog that is athletic, yet graceful, and always seems to be happy. The coat should be non- shedding, and as allergy friendly as possible.
